Karen Little has been a member of and volunteer for Shasta Land Trust since 2001, shortly after the organization's inception. While she does not recall exactly how she heard about the land trust, Karen says that she joined without hesitation because she knew it was something extremely valuable to the community. Ten years later, Karen is still an active volunteer and contributing member.
Back when the land trust office was just a desk in the corner of the local NRCS office, and before the land trust had any paid staff members, one of Karen's first volunteer tasks was assisting with administrative tasks such as making files. She was also involved in some early field work and events with SLT's founder and first Executive Director, Kathleen Gilman. Karen recalls assisting Kathleen with a local owl count, as well as a Plein Air art event in the Igo/Ono area. As the Wildways series of events has evolved, Karen has been a regular volunteer at the Wildways Kickoff Party that takes place early each year. She has volunteered to sell tickets to the Wildways events that take place throughout the year, which go on sale for the first time at the Kickoff Party, to check in guests at the door as they arrive, and more recently she has been a part of the amazing team that puts together the delicious food spread that we all enjoy at the Kickoff Party. She is also active in the field work volunteer opportunities that the land trust offers, especially conservation easement monitoring. Karen is probably the one and only volunteer who can boast that that she has visited all seven of the land trust's conservation easement properties, and has assisted with monitoring on five of them.
