With 45 volunteers from the local community, the cleanup effort collected roughly1840 lbs of trash and recyclables, nearly filling the 13 cubic yard trailer provided by the City of Redding.  Shasta Land Trust sponsored a river cleanup on Saturday, September 19 in the "Henderson Open Space" located behind the Raley's shopping center off of Hartnell Avenue in Redding.

Volunteers included members of Shasta Land Trust, Shasta High School Key Club, Redding Rotary Club, Western Shasta Resource Conservation District, and First Methodist Church.  Special guest volunteers Assemblyman Jim Nielson and the Sierra Nevada Conservancy's Bob Kingman worked side by side throughout the morning picking up trash along the banks of the Sacramento River.

The Cleanup began at 9 am and went until noon, when volunteers were thanked with a free lunch and refreshments donated by Angelo's Pizza Parlor, Cookie Jar and Raley's.  Volunteers also took home raffle prizes provided by Yama Sushi, Yuet Bistro, and Shasta Land Trust.  Additional sponsors included Redding Sign & Banner, Auto Lube, and Mt. Shasta Spring Water.

Support for the cleanup was also provided by the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, the City of Redding, the Redding Cleanup33.comp.jpgRotary Club, and the Western Shasta RCD.

The Shasta Land Trust River Cleanup was part of the Great Sierra River Cleanup coordinated by the Sierra Nevada Conservancy.  "Our sierra rivers provide 65% of the state's water," said Jim Branham, Executive Director of the Sierra Nevada Conservancy.  "We're asking everyone to do their part to protect our community, its water quality, and the local environment."

The Great Sierra River Cleanup will be an annual event that will take place on the third Saturday of September in conjunction with the California Coastal Cleanup Day.  "Our organization is always looking for opportunities to act as good stewards of the land," said Ben Miles, Executive Director of Shasta Land Trust.  "It was great to see so many people that were happy to spend their morning making sure this trash doesn't end up in the Sacramento River.  We look forward to being a part of this amazing effort again next year."
