Great Sierra River Cleanup: Saturday, September 25, 2010  9am-noon

As part of the second annual Great Sierra River Cleanup, Shasta Land Trust will be hosting a cleanup of Boulder Creek in north Redding.  Volunteers from the greater Redding community will come together to spend a morning removing trash from the creek and its floodplain, doing our part to improve this area for human and wildlife use and to keep the trash from making its way into the Sacramento River and eventually the ocean.

Coastal Cleanup Day will be celebrating its 26th year in 2010.  During the last 26 years, over 800,000 Californians have removed more than 14 million pounds of debris from our state's shorelines and coasts.  In 2009, the Sierra Nevada Conservancy sponsored the first Great Sierra River Cleanup as an extension of Coastal Cleanup Day.  With 60-80% of the debris on the coast originating from inland sources, this was a natural extension.  In its first year, the Great Sierra River Cleanup saw over 3,500 volunteers remove more than 130 tons of trash and recyclables from Sierra rivers.

Shasta Land Trust is proud to have been a part of the initial Great Sierra River Cleanup last year and looks forward to helping the event grow by participating again this year.  If you would like to volunteer at Shasta Land Trust's cleanup event, please fill out the registration form at this link.  Pre-registration is required for this event.

This year, Shasta Land Trust's cleanup effort will be focused on two stretches of Boulder Creek:

Water Works Park:
This is the original location that was advertised as Shasta Land Trust's cleanup location.  This location is family friendly: no poison oak, very few blackberries, mostly flat and easily accessed.  Most of the trash at this location is small litter than can be picked up and bagged.

City Property:
This new location is downstream of the Water Works Park location.  Access is by a well maintained gravel road.  There is some poison oak here, and volunteers will need to navigate slightly rougher terrain through tall grass and brush.  Much of the trash at this location is larger items such as tires and shopping carts.  Volunteers must be high school students or older to help at this location.

Volunteers should bring heavy work gloves if possible.   We will provide disposable gloves.  Volunteers should also bring their own water bottle, sunscreen and a hat, and snacks if you think you will get hungry before lunch.  Long pants are suggested for both locations due to tall, dry grass.  Please wear sturdy, closed-toes shoes.

Following the cleanup, a volunteer appreciation party will take place in Water Works Park from approximately noon until 2:00pm.  Lunch will be provided, there will be fun raffle prizes, and all volunteers will have access to the Lazy Lagoon attraction to cool off after a hard morning's work.

All participants in the Great Sierra River Cleanup must sign a release form.  If you are a minor, a parent or guardian must sign the form as well.  You will not be allowed to participate in the cleanup event without a waiver form.  We will have waiver forms available at the registration table on the morning of the event and can email one to you to fill out beforehand if requested.
