Family Day 2011
         Shasta Land Trust presents...
Family Day at Hathaway Ranch
           May 14, 2011
         10:30am-4:00pm

May 14, 2011 was Shasta Land Trust's second Family Day event.  The first Family Day took place in June of 2009.  It is our goal for Family Day to become an annual event that members of the community will look forward to attending every year.  Despite the questionable weather, 49 adults and children made their way out to Hathaway Ranch to participate in Family Day 2011.  They were rewarded with volunteer led activities ranging from geocaching to nature art, a free lunch, and a great time for all!

During the geocaching activity, led by Benita Moore, families used GPS units to discover where caches had been hidden.

At the science experiment station, Dave Bush helped us test the power of the sun as a water heater and taught us how to make a homemade compass from a cork and a straight pin.

At the Creek Exploration station, everyone got to get their feet wet in the creek and learn about the bugs that live there with Cassie Simons and Kathy Hill from Whiskeytown Environmental School.

Penny and Daryl Harris led a nature walk, during which participants learned about native and non-native species, natural forces, and more while exploring new areas of the ranch.

At the nature art station, we all had fun painting rocks and building cairns with Judy Bush.

Lastly, Local Indians for Education set up a station that allowed everyone to learn about Native American customs and try their hand at acorn grinding and playing a drum.

All participants also enjoyed a free lunch featuring delicious sandwiches from Holiday Market and a guitar sing-along courtesy of Terry Craig.
