Food & the Future of Downtown – Featuring the Art of Making Sourdough

Dive in hands first into the exploration of food and the future of downtown. Nick von Beroldigen will guide you through the process of making classic sourdough bread from scratch in Sizzle’s Kitchen, a spacious commissary kitchen. While the bread bakes, enjoy a catered lunch by Furnari Sausage Company during an interactive program curated by Rachel Hatch, Program Officer for The McConnell Foundation. Hear about important movements in Redding’s food history and meet some of the “makers” involved in local small-batch food production. No experience is needed – all baking supplies will be provided including a sourdough starter.

Scattered throughout the Lassen Volcanic National Park's forested areas are stands of old growth trees that can live more than 300 years. Learn more about the diverse mix of pines, firs, and other tree species as you are led on a snowshoeing expedition beginning at the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitors Center. Shasta College Botany Professor, Susannah Fulton will share her knowledge about the conifer species found in this winter wonderland. Snowshoes will be provided, lunch and warm drinks are included.

This family owned and operated farm has been dairying for 50 years in the Cottonwood area. Meet the cows, who all have their own names, enjoy a backstage tour of their operations set amongst beautiful green pastures, learn how to milk a cow, and pet a calf! Celebrate the 50th anniversary of when man first set foot on the moon while enjoying a magical moonlit paddle on Whiskeytown Lake. Follow a guide across the open water to await the full moon rise over the nearby mountains. In the meantime, catch a glimpse of nighthawks and bats soaring over the lake surface.
