Fort Reading Ranch
In the summer of 2025, we were proud to announce the permanent protection of 122 acres at the historic Fort Reading Ranch in Shasta County!
This working landscape is home to productive agriculture, open space, and a rich ranching legacy, which is now preserved for future generations.
Located along Cow Creek, the ranch supports 100 Black Angus cow/calf pairs and produces 200 tons of hay annually. With irrigated pastures, a flood irrigation system, two ag wells (including a high-efficiency well installed in 2023), and essential ranch infrastructure, Fort Reading remains a model of sustainable land stewardship.
This conservation success was made possible through California’s Sustainable Agricultural Lands Conservation Program (SALC), part of California Climate Investments. We thank the Langum Family for their commitment to honoring Dale Bagley’s legacy and protecting this vital land.
Fort Reading Ranch will continue to support local agriculture, safeguard natural resources, and uphold Shasta County’s rural heritage.
