MISSION & VISION

OUR ROOTS

As communities across Northern California began to grow and expand, one Redding resident recognized the importance of protecting the open spaces, oak woodlands, and natural areas that make the region unique.

In 1998, Shasta Land Trust was founded by Kathleen Gilman, whose lifelong appreciation for nature began during her childhood exploring local creeks and hills. After studying zoology and biological conservation, Kathleen returned to Redding to find familiar landscapes changing quickly. Inspired by an article about a land trust on the East Coast and encouraged by supportive friends, she organized a community meeting to explore local conservation efforts. From that meeting, Shasta Land Trust took shape.

Rooted in volunteer commitment and community collaboration, the Land Trust completed its first project on the 2,200-acre Fenwood Ranch, protecting oak woodlands, creeks, and riverfront habitat. Additional projects soon followed, and the organization became a respected voice for conservation in the region.

Today, Shasta Land Trust continues to carry out Kathleen’s vision by protecting the natural beauty and character of Northern California through partnerships, stewardship, and community engagement. Thanks to the dedication of its founders, volunteers, and supporters, the organization’s conservation work continues to benefit the region for generations to come.

MISSION & VISION

At Shasta Land Trust, we protect the beauty, character, and diversity of Northern California’s special places — forever. Through local partnerships, hands-on stewardship, and community adventures, we connect people to the land and inspire action to keep our wild and working landscapes thriving for generations to come.

IMPACT

Since our founding in 1998, the Shasta Land Trust has protected over 61,000+ acres of farmland, open space, and wildlife habitat. As an accredited land trust SLT has worked with willing landowners, partners, local communities, and donors to achieve meaningful and lasting conservation of local lands. The scenic beauty, rich natural resources, and open spaces of far northern California are essential to the health and vibrancy of our families and local communities. Through conservation a lasting impact for future generations has been created.
